My research focuses on investigating the molecular and imaging phenotype of the human vessels and adipose tissue, in order to advance understanding of the predisposition to cardiovascular disease and to possibly produce novel predictors of cardiovascular events. Work from our group has identified vascular oxidative stress and inflammation as key players in atherosclerosis development and progression. Furthermore, we have shown that vascular inflammation can be reflected in changes in the adipose tissue surrounding the vascular wall. These changes can be identified by a novel computed tomography (CT) imaging tool, developed and validated by our lab. My project involves the validation of the predictive value of markers of oxidative stress in death and major adverse cardiovascular events, as well as the development of new CT imaging biomarkers for predicting cardiovascular oxidative stress and disease.
