I joined the De Bruijn lab as a research assistant in 2015, after graduating the University of Reading with an MRes in Biomedical Research. In this role I assist with various projects being undertaken within the lab by performing experiments and analysing data as required, restocking reagents and kits, and maintaining mouse colonies. The skillset I have developed and use within the lab include embryo dissections, FACs analysis, immunohistological staining (whole mount), time lapse microscopy, cloning and bioinformatics analysis.
I have a particular passion and interest in the use of bioinformatics to explore and understand aspects of embryonic Hematopoietic Stem Cell regulation and development on a genome wide scale. Specifically I perform bioinformatics analysis of big data experiments – RNAseq and ATACseq – and have standardised the processing of these types of data within the lab. The key programming languages I use for this include R and Python, both of which are indispensible for handling big data experiments, and various packages for downstream analysis.
