This World Cancer Day, we heard from four Group Leaders at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine about their work and how their groups are helping in the fight against cancer.

Professor KJ Patel is the Chief Scientist of Cancer Research UK, as well as the Director of both the MRC WIMM and the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit (MRC MHU). The Patel Group are investigating how alcohol can contribute to the emergence of a number of common cancers.

Andi Roy is a Professor of Paediatric Haematology in the Department of Paediatrics and a member of the MRC MHU. She is also an honorary paediatric haematology consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Professor Roy leads her group in the study of childhood leukaemia, specifically blood cancers, and how they develop early in life.

Ahmed Ahmed is a Professor of Gynaecological Oncology in the Nuffield Department of Women’s Reproductive Health and a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre. The Ahmed Group is looking into how normal cells develop into cancer cells, with the aim of improving early detection of ovarian cancers.

Ben Fairfax is a Professor of Cancer Immunogenetics in the Department of Oncology, in addition to being an honorary consultant oncologist with the Oxford University Hospitals. His group researches how genetics can influence how well patients respond to cancer immunotherapy.

This video highlights just some of the amazing research being carried out by MRC WIMM researchers in this field.

The research mentioned in this video was funded by the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust, Ovarian Cancer Action and the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre.
