Marco Spartera

  • Graduate reading for D.Phil. in Medical Sciences - Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Specialist in Cardiology
  • Clinical Research Fellow for Multi-Imaging Modalities in Cardiovascular Medicine

I am a cardiologist specialized in non-invasive cardiac imaging with a particular focus on cardiovascular MRI, CT and echocardiography. My medical degree (2011) and my cardiology specialist degree (2017) were both awarded with first class honours at the San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy.

I am currently a graduate reading for D.Phil. in Medical Sciences, currently working at the University of Oxford - Radcliffe Department of Medicine. I am based at the Centre for Magnetic Resonance Research (OCMR).

My doctoral research is on atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is independently associated with a two-fold increased risk of all-cause mortality in women and a 1.5-fold increase in men. Death due to stroke, heart failure, and sudden death, are common even in AF patients treated according to the current evidence base. Contemporary studies show that white matter lesions in the brain, cognitive impairment, decreased quality of life, and depressed mood are common in AF patients, and between 10–40% of AF patients are hospitalized each year.
