RDM Pump Priming Call 2025
This opportunity provides a mechanism to support the development of new collaborations and new research ideas within the topic areas of RDM's cross-cutting research themes, which will lead to research grant applications. There is a focus on de-risking new collaborations and new approaches, and developing pilot data for grant applications.
What are RDM's Cross-Cutting Research Themes?
We have three cross-cutting research themes:
- AI and Medical Big Data
- Cell and Gene Therapy
- Metabolism in Molecular Medicine
The purpose of these themes is to:
- Link our researchers and their methodologies more efficiently
- Develop new cross-disciplinary projects and programmes of research
- Bring in new infrastructure support and equipment
- Attract funding to facilitate translational and clinical studies.
What funding support is available?
A pump-priming project can be for 6–12 months and up to £50K. We anticipate that the average project will be ~£20– £30K. The funding can be requested to cover the direct costs of research such as laboratory consumables, facility time or staff time. The funding cannot be used to purchase equipment, for capital projects or for bridging salary support.
How to apply
Information about the eligibility criteria, how to apply and how your application will be assessed is available in the application guidelines. You must contact the relevant cross-cutting research theme lead to discuss your proposal before submitting your application.

Timeline
We initially anticipate running two pump-priming funding opportunities in the Financial Year 25/26.
We will review the impact and effectiveness of scheme after the initial pilot with the possibility that further opportunities may be run in subsequent years depending on the outcome of the review. To facilitate this review, successful applicants will be required to complete a template demonstrating the impact of the funding at the end of their award.
