My primary research interest focuses on endothelial mechanotransduction in the vascular system. Endothelial cells are constantly exposed to mechanical forces exerted by the blood flow. Shear stress, the frictional force imposed on the endothelial cell layer is important in regulating vascular homeostasis, but it can also be an instigator of atherosclerosis. My current research is investigating how proteins in the endothelial cell layer can sense or transduce force and identifying the downstream mechanosensitive pathways that result in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Dissecting out the signal transduction cascade of newly discovered mechanosensors will enable drugs to be designed that target these novel signaling pathways.
