RDM researchers have been making a strong showing at the British Cardiovascular Society 2019 conference, with OCMR’s Professor Oliver Rider being awarded Michael Davies Early Career Award 2019 at conference in Manchester on Monday 3rd May, and Drs Naveed Akbar and Betty Raman being shortlisted for Society’s Young Investigator award. The Society also thanked Professor Barbara Casadei (currently also the President of the European Society of Cardiology) and other speakers for a range of ‘outstanding’ talks and presentations.

The Michael Davies Early Career Award won by Professor Rider honours researchers who have recently established themselves as independent investigators, and who have made an outstanding contribution to cardiovascular science.

Professor Rider (pictured at the conference) is an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist and Deputy Clinical Director or the University of Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research.

His research has highlighted the benefits of weight loss on the cardiovascular system and more recently, he has made an exciting research discovery about how weight loss can improve the function of the heart. This could lead to the development of new treatments.

Professor Rider, who currently holds a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Intermediate Clinical Research Fellowship, said: “I’m delighted to win this award and to receive further recognition of the pioneering research carried out here in Oxford.

“This research is providing evidence to establish how weight loss benefits the heart and circulatory system. Overall, this could ultimately improve outcomes for patients and save the health service money.

“Although this award has been given to me personally, I must credit the fantastic team I work with at Oxford and the support of the BHF in my career so far.”

Professor Metin Avkiran, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “We would like to congratulate Professor Rider for winning this award and for the contribution that his outstanding research is making in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

“It is well known that obesity can seriously increase your risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases, as well as Type 2 diabetes. The pioneering work of Professor Rider and his group on the impact of obesity, and weight loss, on heart metabolism and function could ultimately help save lives.”

Our congratulations to Professor Rider, as well as Drs. Akbar and Raman.
