The Russel Berrie Foundation established the annual award in 2000 to foster high-quality diabetes research by rewarding outstanding achievement and simultaneously increases collaboration and scientific exchange among major academic medical schools. Recipients are distinguished senior investigators from Columbia University and outside medical institutions.

At the annual Frontiers in Diabetes Research Symposium held at the Berrie Center (Columbia University) Professor Mark McCarthy and Professor Andrew Hattersley (Exeter University) were announced as joint recipients of the Naomi Berrie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research.
