RDM has organised a Mental Health First Aid course which will be delivered by Oxfordshire mental health charity Restore. The course does not teach you to become a therapist, but it does help trainees to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems.
The course will take place on Monday 21 and Monday 28 July, 9.30am-5.00pm in the MRC WIMM Seminar Room.
Please register for the course using this form. Registration will close on Monday 16 June. Your place will be confirmed by Thursday 26 June. Please reserve the dates in your diary.
What it means to be a Mental Health First Aider
The course is not about teaching people to think of themselves as therapists: Mental Health First Aid is about listening, reassuring and responding to a person in distress - and potentially averting a crisis. Becoming a Mental Health First Aider will enable you to:
- Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention
- Encourage a person to identify and access sources of professional help and other support
- Practice active listening and empathy
- Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma
- Discuss the Mental Health First Aider role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality
- Practice self-care
Mental Health First Aid England has more information about becoming a Mental Health First Aider.
Becoming a Mental Health First Aider is not for everyone, so if you wish to find out more about Mental Health there are other courses on Mental Health run via the University. This includes a Mental Health Awareness Course which is also being hosted by RDM on Monday 9 June. Registration for this Mental Health Awareness Course are available on the University website.
