Clinical Tutor for Laboratory Medicine
As Clinical Tutor for laboratory medicine, I lead a team of doctors and administrative staff in the design and delivery of the ten-week laboratory medicine course, which forms the first component of the second Bachelor of Medicine examination. Together we run a teaching programme that is supported by over 100 clinicians and academics across the disciplines of haematology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, histopathology and genetics. Our aim is to help students gain the best possible understanding of the mechanisms of disease and thereby develop a sound approach to diagnostics.
I qualified in medicine at Oxford in 2002, and undertook my subsequent professional training in Oxford, London and Glasgow. During this time, I received my DPhil for research into the transcriptional control of alpha globin expression, supervised by Prof Doug Higgs in the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit. I was appointed as a consultant haematologist for the Oxford University Hospitals Trust in 2014, and my clinical role includes laboratory diagnostics and the care of patients with haemoglobin disorders.
I have been involved in teaching since qualification, and I was joint recipient of the Medical Sciences Division's teaching excellence award in 2007. My other roles include being the clinical tutor for medicine at Jesus College, where I provide pastoral support and teaching for students in years 4 - 6. I also work with colleagues at the Oxford Learning Institute to support faculty development programmes for clinicians and scientists with an interest in medical education. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.
