The award recognises exceptional teaching and learning support and mentorship to students.
Associate Professor Nikki Curry was recognised for consistently prioritising her trainees, holding meetings with them which are regular, focused, constructive and genuinely supportive. Nominators praised Nikki's ability to provide a safe and motivating space in which to discuss scientific challenges, refine ideas and plan. Students also appreciate Nikki's interest in their wellbeing a cultivating a collaborative and inclusive lab culture, where mutual support is encouraged and students feel comfortable seeking help. Nominators said that Nicola inspires confidence, independence and ambition in those she supervises, and creates an environment where all those she supervises can thrive academically, professionally and personally.
Nikki commented: 'I am so delighted to have been given this award, and I am genuinely touched that my team nominated me – so thank you to them.'
Professor Ladislav Valkovič was nominated for his dedication, generosity and consistently supportive supervision. Students noted that Ladislav is exceptionally generous with his time, and his availability and willingness to help create an environment where students feel supported, reassured, and confident in tackling challenges. Nominators also praised Ladislav for fostering a collaborative, friendly and inclusive research group, holding weekly meetings which are supportive and built on a culture of openness and mutual help. He also regularly organises board game nights for OCMR which students say have helped strengthen team relationships and creating a relaxing space to unwind during high-demand periods of study and research. Students said Ladislav exemplifies excellence in every aspect of supervision – academic, professional and pastoral.
Ladislav said: 'Being a supervisor and helping young bright minds grow into world-experts is highly satisfying. Reading the kind words of my students is a completely another level, I feel really humbled. My only hope is that I can live up to their praise.'
Nikki and Ladislav will receive their awards at RDM Day on Tuesday 17 March.
