Professor Rajesh Thakker has been named the 2026 recipient of the William F. Neuman Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), recognising his outstanding scientific contributions to the field.

Professor Rajesh Thakker

The William F. Neuman Award is one of the ASBMR’s most prestigious honours. It recognises an ASBMR member who has made outstanding and major scientific contributions to bone and mineral research, as well as important contributions to colleagues and trainees through teaching, research and administration.

Professor Rajesh Thakker, Emeritus May Professor of Medicine in the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, is internationally recognised for research that has advanced understanding of endocrine and metabolic disorders affecting calcium and phosphate balance. His work has helped define the genetic and molecular basis of several conditions linked to endocrine tumours, kidney stones and bone disease, including rickets and osteoporosis.

His research has combined basic science and clinical investigation to identify defective genes, explain disease mechanisms and improve approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Key areas of contribution include calcium-sensing receptor signalling, the molecular mechanisms of endocrine tumour formation, and the physiology of the renal tubules, where the kidney regulates substances such as calcium and phosphate.

Professor Thakker’s receipt of the award reflects a long-standing international contribution to endocrinology, bone and mineral metabolism, and the translation of genetic and molecular discoveries into improved care for patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders.

Rajesh commented: ‘I am delighted to receive this honour in recognition of my wonderful team of clinical and scientific researchers and global collaborators, whose dedicated work has made the discoveries and facilitated translation of scientific advances into benefits for patients. I am indebted to all of them.’

The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research is a global professional organisation dedicated to advancing scientific discovery, education and clinical practice in bone, mineral and musculoskeletal research.
