Graduate students registered with another university who wish to visit the department to undertake research for more than 6 months can apply to be a Recognised Student. The maximum visit length is 1 year (3 terms) and start dates should align with Oxford's term dates. The process for becoming a Recognised Student takes time and it is advisable to start the process at least 6 months in advance of the intended start date.

Graduate students wishing to visit for less than 6 months can visit as a Student Visitor. Start dates need not align with term dates.

Eligibility for graduate visiting students

  • Graduate research students must be registered with another university and visiting RDM to undertake research for up to a maximum of three terms.
  • Students must be currently enrolled on a course equivalent to a UK post-graduate degree, and their research in Oxford must directly contribute to their course in their home country and their home institution confirms this in writing.
  • It is not possible to be admitted as a Recognised Student if the student has already been matriculated as a member of the University of Oxford.
  • Students visiting on paid internships or work placements are not eligible.

Visa requirements

Depending on their nationality, graduate students meeting the eligibility criteria who are visiting for fewer than 6 months, may visit on a Standard Visitor Visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Depending on their nationality, students wishing to visit for more than six months and applying to be a Recognised Student must apply for a Student Visa.

Both routes will require ATAS depending on the nationality of the student (Education and Student Support - ATAS: Academic Technology Approval Scheme).

Application Process

In the first instance a graduate student must contact a PI in whose group they would like to undertake their research to check they are happy to support an application and that they have the capacity and funding to supervise a student.

Depending on the duration of the visit, the PI will contact the relevant RDM team for either a Student Visitor or Recognised Student application. These teams will advise the PI and student on the next steps.
