DPhil in emerging infections and blood safety

Piya Rajendra is a final-year DPhil candidate in Medical Sciences at the University of Oxford, funded by the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit. Her research investigates emerging infections and blood safety, focusing on the use of blood as a sentinel source for molecular and serological surveillance of arboviral infections in England.

Before Oxford, Piya graduated with distinction with a MSc in Genomic Medicine from Imperial College London, and a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from Royal Holloway. As an undergraduate research assistant at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, she tested plant-derived compounds for antimicrobial properties for commercial partners.
