Josephine Watkins

DPhil Student

I am a first-year DPhil student at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, co-supervised by Professors Christopher Toepfer and Andrew Lewis as part of the NIH OxCam Scholars Program. My research focuses on exploring genetic modifiers of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) using advanced 3D cardiac organoid models derived from induced pluripotent stem cell–cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs). Through disease modelling and mechanistic investigation, I aim to better understand how genetic variation influences HCM phenotype and progression.

I graduated from Columbia University in May 2025 with a BS in Biomedical Engineering. Under the mentorship of Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, I developed a strong interest in cardiovascular research. My undergraduate work included  utilizing matured engineered heart tissues to model cardiac fibroblasts contribution to dilated cardiomyopathy.
