Commencing menopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy and the effect on Metabolic-dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: a pilot mechanistic study
After the menopause women are more than twice as likely to build up fat in the liver (a condition called metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease, MASLD) which can lead to serious liver damage and other health problems. We are running a clinical study to understand how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) affects the development of MASLD.
Who can take part?
- Women who have entered the menopause
- Women who are about to start HRT but have not yet taken their first dose
- Women who have not used HRT in the past 3 months
What does the study involve?
Before using HRT, you will undergo:
- An MRI scan of your liver
- A day of tests at the Clinical Research Unit, Churchill Hospital
We need to arrange these appointments with us before you start HRT.
You will then return after using HRT for 12 weeks for the same set of tests, so we can study the changes that have occurred.
We will reimburse any travel costs and offer compensation for your time and inconvenience.
