Avery Buchanan
Research Assistant
Avery Buchanan took up a Research Assistant position with the Khan Lab in February 2026, having completed her Master of Research in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences Research at King’s College London (September 2024 - January 2026). Her masters project, which investigated the role of Sox2 in Ascl1-directed astrocyte-to-neuron reprogramming in primary cell culture, was partially funded by the Matt Wilson Scholarship for academic and research excellence. In May 2024, she was awarded her Bachelor of Science from Hillsdale College with a major in Physics and a minor in Biochemistry. Across her four years at the university, Avery researched in a biophysics lab, characterising the field-dependent magnetisation of superparamagnetic MyOne Dynabeads (August 2020 – May 2024).
Currently, Avery is using Abdullah Khan’s bone marrow organoid models in collaboration with AstraZeneca to predict the safety profiles of standard leukaemia treatment drugs with the goal of understanding of how these drugs can lead to bone marrow failure in patients. This additional knowledge will allow for the development of safer, more effective blood cancer treatment plans.
