The Diabetes Clinical Network, led by Dr Katharine Owen in OCDEM, is the first clinical network to be launched as part of the Oxford Academic Health Sciences Network (AHSN). The Diabetes Clinical Network is formally evaluating a new app designed to help children control their diabetes.

This photograph was taken at our first Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) Public Engagement Event entitled ‘Unravelling the Mysteries of Diabetes’ held in June 2014. We wanted to create fun and interactive ways of explaining about the diabetes research we undertake in our centre to both adults and children and present scientific research in a manner that was accessible to the general public. Here Dr Martijn van de Bunt, one of our Postdoctoral Fellows, is using food colouring, milk and washing up liquid to demonstrate how proteins interacts with each other and how changes in these interactions could lead to disease. This provided a great way for children ( . . . and adults alike) to try out some simple experiments, learn more about laboratory research and provided a friendly environment in which they could ask questions about our research into type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
