This article summarizes the French-American-British (FAB) classification of leukemia. This classification has now been partially superseded by the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of leukemia. However, it is still useful for the initial morphological diagnosis of leukemia, or when the range of diagnostic methods available is limited by resources. The classification is based on morphology, cytochemistry, and immunophenotyping, if available.
