Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the population ages, the prevalence of diseases linked to plaque formation will only increase. This means new tools are needed in the fight against this major public health issue. Gene therapy has shown promise in animal models and early clinical trials have demonstrated that this is can be safely delivered therapy to humans. This chapter focuses on the potential gene targets, what we have found in animal studies so far, and how does this translate into clinical practice.
