Nikolaos Sousos
Clinical Research Fellow
Nikolaos Sousos (MD (AUTh), MSc (AUTh), PGCert (HMS), DPhil (Oxon), AFHEA (UK)) is a Haematologist with a special interest in myeloid neoplasms.
He has been a clinical research fellow at University of Oxford since 2017, based at the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Biology (HSCB) Lab, in Medical Research Council (MRC) Molecular Haematology Unit (MHU), MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM). His research focuses on genetic lineage tracing in clonal haematopoiesis and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), with a special interest in megakaryocyte/platelet-biased haematopoiesis. He has published a long list of publications in high-impact, top-tier journals either as first author or co-author. He initially joined HSCB Lab as a Visiting Clinical Research Fellow (03/2017-03/2018), after being awarded a prestigious fellowship by the Hellenic Society of Haematology Foundation. Subsequently, he achieved a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Oxford Centre Clinical Research Training Fellowship to complete the DPhil in Medical Sciences programme (04/2018-08/2023), offered by Radcliffe Department of Medicine, University of Oxford.
Nikolaos's translational research is closely linked with his clinical practice, based at the Department of Clinical Haematology, The Churchill Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His clinic focuses on myeloid disease and particularly MPNs. Over the last 4 years he has actively participated in more than 60 clinical trials (mostly in myeloid disease) as a sub-investigator, while he has been responsible for the management of the MPN biobank in Oxford. In view of deepening his knowledge and skills in translational and clinical research, alongside his clinical activity in Oxford, he has also graduated Harvard Medical School (PGCert), following completion of the Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Medical Education, Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program, a 1-year Certificate Program (01/2022-06/2023) (under a scholarship provided by A.G. Leventis Foundation). He holds a postgraduate degree (MSc) in Medical Research Methodology (09/2009-03/2014) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he had previously earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) (10/2000-11/2006) and subsequently completed his residency and was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Haematology (01/2010-11/2016).
Nikolaos is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) following completion of the Advanced Teaching and Learning (ATL) programme - Medical Sciences Division (01/2022-10/2022), provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning, University of Oxford and Advance HE (UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education Descriptor 1). Lastly, he has completed the postgraduate programme "Mastering Medical Teaching", provided by Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Faculty Development Center for Medical Teachers.
Amongst other organisations, Nikolaos is a member of the Hellenic Society of Haematology (11/2012-ongoing), British Society for Haematology (10/2017-ongoing), European Hematology Association (01/2015-ongoing), American Society of Hematology (11/2023-ongoing), and University of Oxford Alumni as well as Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Medical Education Alumni and Harvard Alumni associations. He is a member of Medical Council of Thessaloniki (GR) (02/2007-06/2008, and 01/2010-ongoing) as well as General Medical Council (UK) (05/2017-ongoing).
