I am a biochemist by training and generally interested in biophysics, spectroscopy and membrane biology.

Modern microscopy enables us to investigate lipid and protein diffusion as well as their interactions in model membrane systems and also in the cellular membrane.  Over the past years studies of live cell membrane dynamics revealed a huge heterogeneity and suggest a suborganisation into small functional domains.

I aim to study lipid and protein diffusion as one of the most important quantities in membrane dynamics. Translating observations made on model membranes and linking them to cellular events such as signalling responses displays my major interest. Therefore, I use the whole range of (model) membrane systems from entirely artificial membranes like supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) or giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) over cell derived membranes like giant unilamellar vesicles (GPMVs) to the actual cellular membrane.

Different variants of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and super-resolution imaging will be applied to uncover crucial components in and mechanisms upon cellular signalling responses. Improvement of these methods will lead to a better understanding of membrane organisation and includes the optimisation of fluorescent probes, ways of data acquisition and data analysis. Based in Immunology I attempt to characterise the diffusion behaviour of the key players during T-cell activation.
