New research finds genetic differences that help to explain why some babies are born bigger or smaller than others. The research, led by the University of Oxford, also reveals how genetic differences provide an important link between an individual’s early growth and their chances of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease in later life.

Nicknamed ‘Why?’ during his years as a student nurse, Tony O’Malley is always asking questions. His quest for explanations is a trait that’s come in handy time and time again in his role as a patient advocate. ony recently won the 2015 Supporter of the Year Gold Award in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Annual Staff Recognition Awards, a testament to his tireless campaigning to improve patient safety and patient engagement in diabetes care. I caught up with him to learn more about what got him involved in patient advocacy and how we can all work together to improve clinical care.
