Congratulations to Prof Jackie Boultwood and Dr Andrea Pellagatti, who have been awarded a project grant from Leuka – a leading leukaemia research charity. Their work will focus on Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML), a blood cancer with a poor prognosis and limited treatment options.

Researchers at the MRC WIMM have discovered an unexpected way by which different pathways of the skin’s defence system interact, and how they can go astray in skin inflammation. This research suggests a new line of investigation to develop treatments for conditions such as eczema.

Researchers from OCDEM recently attended the ‘Innovators in Diabetes’ programme – a Diabetes UK-supported scheme now in its 10th year. The programme aims to create a vibrant diabetes research network and facilitate knowledge exchange. Dr Kerry McLaughlin, postdoctoral researcher in OCDEM and programme alumni, tells us more about the day.

The number of people being diagnosed with heart failure in the UK continues to grow, and the poorest people are significantly more likely to be affected by the condition, new research from The George Institute for Global Health at the University of Oxford has found. The research was co-led by Professor Kazem Rahimi, and RDM Principal Investigator.

A pioneering European research project aims to lead to new diagnostic tests to assess patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and identify those most at risk for developing severe inflammation and liver scarring. Researchers from the Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research will play a key role in evaluating a series of biomarkers for NAFLD.

New research shows that blood donors could safely give blood more frequently than is allowed at present. At the moment in the UK men can give blood every 12 weeks, women every 16 weeks. The new research demonstrates that in certain situations and for certain donors, shortening the donation interval is a viable approach for blood services to take.
