The annual call for nominations for the Title of Associate Professor (AP) and University Research Lecturer (URL) has just been announced. These are prestigious titles within the University and we are working to ensure we are formally recognising the achievements of our staff.

This image belongs to Oxford University Images, and may be purchased from OUI. To use, contact Janet Avison (janet.avison@admin.ox.ac.uk) who will be happy to quote you a cost for usage.

The criteria for both titles are as follows:

  • substantial independent research achievements (as evidenced by your publication record)
  • success in obtaining externally peer-reviewed research grants, independently
  • have done some teaching (this does not have to be lectures to undergrads – it can be graduate supervision, tutorials, teaching on courses etc)
  • “Good-citizenship” – have made a sustained and continuing contribution to the general work of the department or Medical Sciences Division over the last three years. This includes mentoring, examining theses, sitting on committees, public engagement and PPI, event organisation and taking part in interview panels.

The key difference between the two titles is that only staff members in Grade 9 and above (or in an honorary consultant grade) are eligible for an Associate Professor title. Read more about eligibility for URL and AP titles.

Nominations for the title of AP (Associate Professor)

Your application should consist of:

  1. a completed application form (Annex A);
  2. an up to date CV; and
  3. a reference from your Head of Division, or another senior academic from within the department

Nominations for the title of URL (University Research Lecturer)
Your application should consist of:

  1. a completed application form (Annex D);
  2. an up to date CV; and
  3. a letter of support from your supervisor or Head of Division outlining how you meet the criteria.

Applications for both AP and URL titles will be considered by a departmental review committee who will rank the nominations against any others received before submitting them to the Medical Sciences Division. Applications are especially welcome from under-represented groups in order to address the under-representation of women and minority ethnic staff among the University’s senior academics.

As the department has to rank all the nominations we put forward, we are setting an RDM internal deadline of noon, Friday 4 May and applications should be emailed to Ruth McCaffrey (ruth.mccaffrey@rdm.ox.ac.uk).

Please note that, within RDM, anyone holding either an AP or URL title becomes a PI in the department.

If you are unsure about applying or want advice and input into your application, please either contact Ruth McCaffrey and/or your Head of Division. Ruth is very happy to meet with potential applicants and provide advice and support. If you do not need help with your application, please still email Ruth and let her know of your intention to apply.
