The Diabetes Trials Unit (DTU) was founded by Professor Rury Holman in 1985 to help identify improved methods to diagnose, monitor and treat people with diabetes, cardiometabolic or related disorders.

The DTU was a founding member of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) within the University of Oxford’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine. OCDEM is a pioneering centre combining clinical care, research and education to discover treatments or technologies that could make a difference to people living with diabetes and other endocrine or metabolic disorders. Many of DTU’s early-phase clinical trials are conducted in the purpose-built OCDEM Clinical Research Unit (CRU) facility.

The DTU works closely with the Health Economic Research Centre HERC

The DTU moved to its current location at the Churchill Hospital site in March 2003.
