Upper dermal lymphatics are highlighted by a rim of elastin and can be identified by means of an orcein stain. Using this technique and transmission electron microscopy we studied skin biopsies from eight patients with psoriasis, two with palmar plantar pustulosis and six with chronic stable plaque psoriasis. More numerous lymphatics in the sub-papillary region of the upper dermis were easily identified by the elastic stain. They were dilated compared with normal skin and valves were more readily visualised. Contrary to previous reports we found no identifiable lymphatics in the papillae and we were unable to confirm previous reports of ultrastructural abnormalities.
