The 2017 procedures for conferment of the titles of Associate Professor (AP) and University Research Lecturer (URL) have been announced. The deadline for nominations for both titles is noon on Monday, 20 March 2017.

Please note that the two exercises are distinct and the paperwork differs for each title.  Applications are especially welcome from under-represented groups in order to address the under-representation of women and minority ethnic staff among the University’s senior academics.

Nominations for the title of Associate Professor

Following the renaming of the main University Lecturer Grade as Associate Professor, Divisional Boards  have the discretion to confer the title of Associate Professor on eligible members of staff (Grade 9 or 10 or, if a clinician, on an honorary consultant grade) provided they meet the criteria set out in Annexe A (below).  If you are considering making an application, you are encouraged to discuss your case with your Divisional Head or Lead Administrator in the first instance. Should you wish to apply, please send the following to jeanette.ferguson@rdm.ox.ac.uk before noon on 20 March:

  1. an up-to-date CV; and
  2. an AP application form (Annexe A); and
  3. a reference from your Head of Division, or another senior academic from within the department.

It would be helpful if you could let me know, before the deadline, of your intention to apply. Applications shall be considered by a departmental review committee who will rank the nominations against any others received before submitting them to the Medical Sciences Division.

The University Research Lecturer Scheme

The criteria for the URL scheme are attached (Annexe C). If you are considering making an application, you are encouraged to discuss your case with your Divisional Head or Lead Administrator in the first instance. Should you wish to apply, please send the following to jeanette.ferguson@rdm.ox.ac.uk before noon on 20 March:

  1. a URL application form (Annexe D); and
  2. an up-to-date CV; and
  3. a letter of support from your supervisor or Head of Division outlining how you meet  the criteria.

It would be helpful if you could let Jeanette know, before the deadline, of your intention to apply under this scheme.  Applications shall be considered by a departmental review committee who will rank the nominations against any others received before submitting them to the Medical Sciences Division.

The criteria for the two schemes are similar, with the key difference being that only staff members on Grade 9 or 10 (or on an honorary consultant grade) are eligible for the title of Associate Professor.

Please send any questions you might have about the schemes either to your Head of Division or to Dr Ruth McCaffrey (ruth.mccaffrey@rdm.ox.ac.uk).
