Scientific Category

First Place:

Dancing Bubbles by Erdinc Sezgin (WIMM-IMD, Eggeling Group)

The image shows cellular vesicles. Under the microscope, most of them move. The image is a combination of 30 images, each from different time points. Since they move, they form this dancing pattern when images from different time points are merged.

Second Place:

The last breath before the firework by Erdinc Sezgin and Marco Friztsche (WIMM-IMD, Eggeling Group)

Each cell has an interior network, called actin network, keeping the cell intact. The image shows an unusual state of this network right after the cell died which resembles the firework.

Third place:

Patchwork Heart by Michael Weinberger (WIMM-NDCLS, Patient Group)

The image shows some of the complexity within a developing (zebrafish) embryo. Featured is the epicardium, a layer of cells that envelops the heart (lower left corner). Staining the cell membrane (magenta) as well as the nucleus (green) reveals the patchwork cover epicardial cells form to ensure healthy heart development.
