Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of mortality worldwide, is a heterogeneous trait that results from the complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and clinical risk factors (Kathiresan and Srivastava 2012). Despite the recent advances in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis, structural heart disease, and heart rhythm disorders, the heritability of CVD is still poorly understood.
